The Texas Humane Legislation Network (THLN) is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the humane treatment of animals through legislation and advocacy. THLN was founded in 1975 by a handful of concerned advocates from across the state who recognized that the humane treatment of animals needed to be the law. After over half a century of advocacy, THLN’s mission is enabled by a strong volunteer leadership team on its Board of Directors and its ambassadors.

As the Government Relations Assistant, you will support our legislative efforts by assisting with advocacy, research, and administrative tasks. This role is ideal for someone committed to animal welfare with a keen interest in government relations and an eagerness to contribute to meaningful legislative change.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Sr. Director of Government Relations to develop and implement government relations strategies and plans.
  • Maintain a presence at the Texas State Capitol throughout the legislative session.
  • Monitor committee hearings and events.
  • Support advocacy efforts by coordinating and meeting with legislators, stakeholders, and partners.
  • Assist in organizing and executing advocacy events and campaigns.
  • Research specified legislative issues, policies, and historical data to support the development of advocacy strategies and materials.
  • Persist in developing positive working relationships with legislators and their staff, elected and government officials, and THLN’s lobbyist to advance THLN’s legislative agenda.
  • Draft and edit persuasive letters, fact sheets, briefs, and other communication materials for distribution to legislators, supporters, and the public.
  • Manage schedules, organize meetings, and maintain records for the Sr. Director’s use, ensuring timely follow-up on legislative matters and advocacy initiatives.
  • Assist in planning and executing events, including legislative briefings, fundraisers, and community outreach programs.
  • Provide as-needed administrative support to the Sr. Director of Government Relations.
  • In-state travel is required, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Critical thinking and proactive problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and motivation to succeed in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to interface with all levels of volunteers, staff, board members, and elected officials.
  • High competence with business software, including Microsoft Office; experience with computer systems and databases.
  • Ability to work on occasional evenings and weekends, as required.
