Assistant Director – Office of Economic Development and Cultural Affairs
Lead the department’s operations and support San José’s mission of economic vitality, cultural vibrancy, and equitable growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as Chief Operating Officer, providing strategic leadership and operational oversight.
- Manage day‑to‑day operations, overseeing three divisions and the strategic support unit, to support 61 staff and a 67 million annual budget.
- Translate the Director’s strategic vision into actionable goals and measurable outcomes aligned with the Two‑Year Economic Strategy Work Plan.
- Ensure operational excellence, streamline processes, and integrate emerging technologies such as automation and artificial intelligence to improve efficiency and service delivery.
- Foster collaboration across internal teams, other city departments, and external partners.
- Build a high‑performing, inclusive workforce and maintain a culture of accountability, transparency, and innovation.
- Act as trusted advisor and executive‑level liaison to the City Manager, Mayor, and City Council.
Qualifications
- Education
:
Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, economics, real estate, or a related field (master’s degree highly preferred). - Experience
:
Seven years of increasingly responsible experience in business management, administration, or operations, at a level equivalent to Deputy Director.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: 184,968 – 298,804 (depending on qualifications and experience).

City pays 90% of the premium for the lowest‑priced nondeductible plan. - Dental insurance:
City pays 100% of the premium for the lowest‑priced plan. - Vacation:
Starts at three weeks per year, increases to five weeks after 15 years of service, plus executive leave (40 hours annually, up to 80 hours for successful candidates) and sick leave (≈8 hours per month). - Paid holidays: 15 days per year.
