Job Summary
Under general supervision of a Sergeant, responsible for the protection of life and property; prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the general enforcement of laws and ordinances in a designated area on an assigned shift or on special assignments; routine patrol; preliminary investigation, and traffic regulation duties which may be performed in motorized vehicles or on foot; involves an element of personal danger and the employee must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies;
assignments may include work at the police department on special tasks, which call upon experience as a uniformed patrol officer; assignments are general and special instructions are received from a superior officer who revises work methods and results through reports, personal inspection and discussion.
Essential Functions
- Establish a bond between the Police Department and the community in an effort to reduce or remove the opportunity for crime.
- Conduct public education programs on crime prevention and safety via various community group meetings.
- Evaluate crime patterns and institute crime prevention programs related to specific crimes.
- Analyze crimes against property and evaluate current security measures to recommend new procedures to owners or residents.
- Maintain and update various file systems within the department.
- Answer calls and complaints involving fire, robberies and other criminal and non criminal activity.
Qualifications
- Possess a Bachelor’s Degree (any field).
- Successful completion of police examination and physical requirements.
- Applicant must be at least 21 years of age and not yet 35 at the time of the written exam.
- Must be United States Citizen or alien admitted for permanent residence or lawfully admitted for temporary residence and can produce evidence of intention to become a citizen of the United States and have appropriate visas authorizing work.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Proficiency in Lotus Notes (required within six (6) months of hire), and Microsoft Word.
Physical/Mental Requirements
- Run a distance under 50 yards to persons requiring emergency assistance or apprehension.
- Subdue resisting individuals.
- Lift and carry equipment and persons.
- Climb flights of stairs/ladders and maneuver over obstacles.
- Walk, stand or sit for long periods of time (including driving).
