We have a particular focus on supporting the smallest businesses and those in under-resourced communities. Our work is bolstered by extensive research that enables us to target and measure our programs most effectively and to educate stakeholders and policymakers about key issues impacting America’s entrepreneurs.
We are a team of 31, headquartered in Washington, DC, with offices in California (four locations), Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Albuquerque, New York City, and Dallas/Ft. Worth.
The Central California Outreach Manager develops and implements strategies to conduct outreach to small business owners, organizations, policymakers and other small business advocates, in coordination with the California Director. This position focuses on a variety of current issues in the Central Valley and beyond, including healthcare, access to capital, antitrust, immigration, workforce, and more. The ideal candidate will have expertise in areas of outreach, public policy and business community engagement and be able to work simultaneously on multiple projects. Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred. This position reports to Small Business Majority’s California Director.
NOTE: Candidates must reside in the Fresno Area with the ability to regularly travel throughout the Central California region, and occasionally to other parts of the state.
Regular regional travel of 25% is required.
Responsibilities include:
Outreach & Engagement: 60%
· Identify and develop strong external relationships with small business owners, business organizations and policymakers throughout Central California.
· Educate and conduct outreach to small business owners, the self-employed and business organizations like chambers and merchant associations to deliver free and low-cost resources and advocate for our policy agenda.
· In collaboration with local chambers and business organizations, organize, plan and execute in-person presentations, webinars, roundtables, focus groups, and other small business owner engagement activities.
· Develop small business owner spokespeople for policy and programmatic engagement opportunities
· The Outreach Manager will coordinate with the Engagement Team, federal Government Affairs Team, and Public Relations Director to identify small business owners who can serve as spokespeople for national, multi-state, or federal opportunities.
· The Outreach Manager will work closely with the California Team to identify small business owners who can serve as spokespeople for state or local spokesperson opportunities and collaborate with the Outreach Coordinator as needed to support relationship-building efforts through administrative and logistical assistance, including cold-calling as needed.
· Submit digital engagement requests to ensure appropriate support while traveling and in the field.
· Use creative and culturally appropriate techniques to help grow the small business owner network in California, particularly in regions in the Central Valley
· Enter small business and other contact information into Small Business Majority’s database in a timely and accurate manner.
· Work closely with the Senior Director, Education & Resources to advance the expansion of SBM’s Venturize digital resource, including the growth of the Venturize matching tool in Central California and the development of the partnerships that make this possible
· Stay highly aware of economic, political and small business developments in the Central Valley by reading news articles, journals, and listening to podcasts and programs to understand where to engage
· Distribute polling and research, press statements, and organizational-wide resources to business owner and employer group stakeholders strategically
Policy and Advocacy: 30%
· Inform and activate small business owners to take action to affect state and federal policy decisions by writing letters to policymakers, submitting opinion pieces to local media, possibly testifying at legislative hearings etc.
· Participate in panels, press conferences, and regional events, and possibly testify at legislative hearings
· In coordination with our national Communications team, pitch stories, secure media coverage and place op-eds and other pieces into business and mainstream media
· Work with Communications staff to coordinate launches and media events
Strategic Thinking and Development: 10%
· Develop strategies to successfully meet specific deliverables related to various grant funded projects on behalf of Small Business Majority in California and the ability to leverage those activities to meet broader goals, like advancing our state policy agenda.
· Assist the California Director in identifying funding opportunities for Small Business Majority from philanthropic foundations, corporate giving programs, etc. and develop partnerships that make this possible.
· Identify nascent stage opportunities and initiatives in the Central Valley to position Small Business Majority to lead in programmatic or policy response.
· Keep detailed records of outreach efforts and work in conjunction with the California Director and Project Director to present information for funder reports
· Work with the California Director to align and improve internal processes
Additional responsibilities may include:
· Support team members in other regions of the state when needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Minimum 5 years’ experience in state advocacy, public policy, or political organizing required with demonstrated success advancing a policy agenda. Outreach or public engagement experience, work within the business community may be substituted for some years’ experience.
· General knowledge of California’s political and economic landscape, and in-depth knowledge of the Central Valley’s political and economic landscape.
· Strong ability and proven-track record of building and maintaining strong professional relationships with a variety of external stakeholders
· Regional travel required throughout Central California. Must be available for periodic travel throughout California and attend key external and internal meetings out of state (including SBM’s annual 3-day retreat in Washington, DC)
· Experience with Salesforce CRM is a plus
· Superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
· Ability to work in a flexible, entrepreneurial environment with frequently shifting priorities, deadlines, evolving internal processes and structures
· Self-starter who has demonstrated ability to network with small business owners, business organizations and policymakers
· Collaborative in nature with ability to work remotely in conjunction with team members across the country
· Strong sense of accountability; driven to meet and exceed expectations
· Successful experience fundraising from corporate and/or philanthropic institutions, a plus
· Experience working for an elected official, a plus.
· Must be able to work from a home office
· Bi-lingual (Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin) a plus
Location: Must reside in the Central Valley Area with ability to travel at least 25%.
Salary Range: 70K – 90K depending on experience
