The Law Courts of Newfoundland and Labrador are recruiting for immediate and anticipated vacancies for Court Officer IA positions of various durations and in various locations. As an employee, you will be provided with the appropriate training to equip you to perform the duties of a Court Officer IA. You will work with and contribute to a dynamic and dedicated team that will expose you to the daily operations of the Province’s court system. You will be further supported with ongoing training and professional development opportunities as well as a variety of wellness and safety supports.
About Us
Court of Appeal (St. John’s) has jurisdiction to hear appeals in criminal, civil and family law matters from the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, Provincial Court (indictable offences) and designated boards and administrative tribunals.
Supreme Court (St. John’s, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Grand Bank, Corner Brook, Happy Valley-Goose Bay) is the province’s superior trial court with the authority to hear a wide range of cases including civil, estate, bankruptcy, family and criminal matters. The Supreme Court also hears appeals in certain matters and applications for judicial review.
Provincial Court (St. John’s, Harbour Grace, Grand Bank, Clarenville, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Corner Brook, Stephenville, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Wabush) is the Court of first instance for all criminal and regulatory offences. Trials of the vast majority of such offences are concluded there. The Court also serves as the Youth Court, Traffic Court (including contraventions tickets), Small Claims Court for most civil claims up to $25,000.00, and – outside of those areas covered by the Family Division of the Supreme Court – deals with most family law matters other than divorce or division of property under the Family Law Act. The Court also conducts inquiries into accidental or mysterious deaths or fires.
About the Opportunities
The Court Officer IA performs specialized legal clerical work in the procedural operations of the registries and courtrooms, both in independent settings and as part of a team. This includes:
- Processing and facilitating courtroom appearances (both in-person and remotely using various types of technology). This involves some public speaking abilities.
- Entering documentation in the Court’s case management system; and performing Justice of the Peace duties.
- Typing complete verbatim transcripts of court proceedings from digital recordings, as required.
- Providing excellent frontline services, at the service counters, via phone and e-mail.
- Calling cases, setting appearance dates, recording the proceedings using digital recording software and preparing minutes of the highlights of each appearance.
- Receiving and reviewing documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with various legislation and policies.
- Interacting and engaging with internal and external stakeholders, including the legal community and the general public.
- Performing other related work as required.
Screening Criteria
About You
Your education includes completion or near completion of a Diploma in Office Administration or equivalent combination of training and experience. You have experience in office administration and you will also demonstrate the successful completion of a Keyboarding Test with a minimum typing speed of 40 net words per minute with 90 percent accuracy.

You are an administrative professional with keen attention to detail, critical-thinking skills and can effectively manage time and tasks to assist critical judicial activity within the Province’s law courts. Operating in a frontline service role, you are an effective communicator while interacting with a variety of stakeholders (lawyers, self-represented litigants, judges, members of the public, accused persons, witnesses, and others) and you thrive on building and maintaining professional relationships. You recognize the need for self-care and are able to cope with high stress situations and/or exposure to sensitive and graphic content. You thrive in a professional environment that is team-oriented, dynamic and offers variety in each workday. You apply confidentiality and privacy practices in all situations.
