The University of Washington Police Department, a unit in the Division for Campus Community Safety has an outstanding opportunity for a Deputy Chief for Police Administration to join their team.

The University of Washington Police Department is an accredited public safety department that provides for the overall safety and security of the campus community. UWPD’s responsibilities include deterring, reducing and solving crime; engaging in proactive crime prevention and problem-solving strategies; completing investigations for prosecution; dignitary protection; and handling large crowds such as NCAA football games and other athletic events, concerts and other activities.
Reporting to Chief of Police, and operating with delegated authority, the Deputy Chief for Police Administration provides leadership and manages the department’s administrative office and functions to provide effective and efficient law enforcement and public safety services to the citizens of the University of Washington.
This position is responsible for oversight of the Administrative Division, which includes Logistics and Planning, Information and Technology, and oversight of Internal Affairs, and serves as liaison to external partners including SPD, WSP, FBI, Eastside Chiefs, King County Police Chiefs & Sheriffs, and Coalition of Small Police Agencies (CSPA). This position is also responsible for continuous enforcement of laws and ordinances, the protection of life and property, and the preservation of peace within the University community.
The individual will also be responsible for policy updates as needed.
This position is part of the senior leadership team for UWPD and, with the Deputy Chief for Police Operations, will assume command of the Department in the absence of the Chief of Police. The incumbent will serve as a member of the Command Staff and have delegated responsibility for data driven strategic goals related to all law enforcement administration. Must keep abreast of the changing laws and community opinions in representing the department and reviewing policy updates.
This position works 100% onsite. This position is located at UW Police Department in a state-of-the-art building 3939 15th Ave NE. Applicants must be comfortable working in a police station environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Plans, directs and manages the Administrative Division to include Logistics and Planning, Education and Training, Information and Technology, and Internal Affairs, and provides leadership and management oversight for the entire department in the absence of the Director/Chief of Police. 30%
* Evaluates subordinate performance; participates in personnel actions such as appointments, promotions, demotions, discipline and scheduling; reviews crime trends; directs the development of personnel assigned to the Administrative Division, including supervision of education and training of department personnel; working with the DCCS HR team, facilitates and coordinates the department’s recruitment process for new hires, and supports retention strategy 15%
* Monitors department police administration by attending various meetings, observational review of subordinates, regularly reviews the schedules, timesheets, criminal reports, operational reports and other department activity reports for quality and approval. 10%
* Participates in labor/management negotiations and joint labor/management meetings. 10%
* Assists the Chief of Police and the executive leadership team in the development and control of the annual budget proposal in formulation and implementing police policy, procedures, rules, regulations and programs; supports identification and submission of grants and in seeking Department funding opportunities. 10%
* Fosters communications and cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, departments and personnel. 10%
* Participates in administrative On-Call rotation and respond to scenes of major crimes, emergency situations or other critical incidents, providing support or direction of activities as necessary. 10%
* Oversees and coordinates special projects as needed. 5%
This position manages 2 employees (2.0 FTE).
This position performs essential services and may be required to work during any period of declared suspended operation.
