We’re hiring in Chicago. Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) is looking for a General Deputy to the Flemish Economic Representative to join our team and help support Flemish companies in their international growth ambitions while strengthening trade and investment ties across the U.S. Midwest.
This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of international business, economic development, and government representation. The position includes supporting Flemish companies with market information, business development, prospecting, outreach, and event initiatives throughout the region.
We’re looking for someone with strong communication skills, a solid understanding of trade and investment, and an interest in helping companies build meaningful cross-border connections. Knowledge of the U.S. Midwest, the Flemish economy, and Dutch is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare company-specific proposals and respond to inquiries about doing business in Flanders
- Build networks and proactively identify potential investment leads
- Identify and assess target companies
- Offer one-on-one guidance and support to Flemish companies within the post’s jurisdiction
- Plan and coordinate individual prospecting visits
- Promote awareness among Flemish companies of economic opportunities in the Midwest
- Gather information on the host country’s market regulations
- Help organize individual and group activities for FIT and external partners
- Build networks and maintain relationships with importers and prospective investors through active outreach
- Initiate and organize marketing events, including conferences, seminars, and visits to Flanders
Desired Skills
- Master’s degree, preferably in a field aligned with the main responsibilities
- Minimum of three years of experience in an economic or commercial representation office, or in a similarly relevant professional environment
- Proficiency in standard IT applications
- Knowledge of international trade and investment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of Dutch is an asset
- Familiarity with both the U.S. and Flemish economies
- Knowledge of the U.S. Midwest is an asset
- Detail‑oriented, well‑organized, and structured working style
- Comfortable interacting with a wide range of professional stakeholders
