District Director of Conservation – Summary
The District Director of Conservation oversees all programs, funding, and operations for the Soil & Water Conservation District. This role manages conservation initiatives, administers grants, supervises staff and contractors, and works closely with the District Board and partner agencies to protect natural resources.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead conservation education programs and public outreach efforts.
- Develop and manage the district budget, strategic plans, and equipment needs with the Board.
- Coordinate with federal/state partners (NRCS, ISDA, FSA) on conservation efforts.
- Apply for, manage, and report on grants.
- Supervise staff and contractors, including hiring, training, and performance management.
- Handle administrative tasks (reports, payroll, invoices, meetings).
- Communicate with the public via media, newsletters, and events.
- Provide regular updates to the Board and county officials.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in conservation or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with software (e.g., GIS, QuickBooks, Microsoft Office).
- Ability to manage multiple projects and work with diverse stakeholders.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends.
- Valid driver's license.
- Capable of both office and field work, including physical activity and exposure to outdoor conditions.
