Context

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been active in Iraq since 1976, supporting the Government and people of Iraq in advancing sustainable development, strengthening institutions, and promoting stability and resilience. Aligned with national priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UNDP Iraq addresses complex social, economic, environmental, and governance challenges through integrated and inclusive development programmes. A central element of this work is evidence‑based economic analysis that informs policy design, programme formulation, and assessment of development impact. Within the Country Office, the Economist Programme provides analytical and advisory support on economic and social issues, contributing to strategic decision‑making and inclusive growth. Working under the guidance of the Governance Analyst, the Economist engages closely with government counterparts, UN partners, international financial institutions, civil society, and internal UNDP teams to strengthen policy impact and foster innovation. The role supports UNDP’s portfolio approach, requiring collaboration across units and disciplines, and contributes to advancing UNDP’s mandate through research, policy advice, partnerships, and volunteerism.

Description of Duties

  • Provide policy advice and analytical support on economic and development issues to UNDP management, programmes, and projects.
  • Conduct research and produce analytical reports to inform inclusive economic development strategies and programme design.
  • Support knowledge generation and capacity development on economic and development issues with national counterparts.
  • Contribute to strategic partnerships and resource mobilization efforts, including identifying grassroots innovations.
  • Support advocacy and awareness‑raising for UNDP’s mandate and mission.
  • Design, test, and evaluate a portfolio of innovative solutions, adapting approaches based on evidence and results.
  • Promote volunteerism and contribute to community engagement initiatives in line with the UNV mandate.

Profile Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, development studies, public policy, or closely related fields (Master’s degree or equivalent is an asset).
  • Minimum 7 years of professional experience in economic research, policy analysis, and development programming.
  • Experience in design, monitoring, and evaluation of development projects.
  • Strong analytical, writing, and reporting skills.
  • Proficiency in statistical and data analysis tools, ERP systems, and MS Office applications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
  • Fluency in Arabic and English.
