Overview
The Oxnard Police Department invites applications for the Entry Level Police Officer (Public Safety Trainee) position. Candidates selected for hire will enter a 23‑week Police Academy and, upon completion, will join the field training program in the Patrol Division as a probationary officer.
Pay Rates
Entry Level Police Officer (during academy): $34.9343 hourly.
Successful Police Academy Graduates: $45.1938 – $67.7063 hourly, approximately $94,003.10 – $ annually.

Training and Responsibilities
Selected candidates attend a POST‑certified Police Academy, gaining instruction in criminal‑justice fundamentals, law‑enforcement procedures, first aid, physical fitness, and related duties. Successful academy graduates enter the field training program and are assigned to the Patrol Division in a probationary status.
Eligibility Requirements
- Age:
Must be 21 years of age at the time of application. - US Citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.
- High School Graduate, GED, or college degree (any level). Must be an accredited U.S. high‑school graduate.
- Driver’s License:
Valid California driver license or ability to obtain one at the time of hire. - Language:
Ability to read and speak English. - Vision:
Must meet California POST medical standards. - College:
Highly desirable. - Prior
Experience:
No experience required.
- Convictions:
Must be of good moral character with no felony convictions. - Medical:
Must meet California POST medical and psychological standards. - Background:
Extensive investigation, polygraph, post‑offer psychological and medical examinations, including drug and alcohol screening.
Application and Examination Process
Applicants must successfully meet the written examination requirement and submit qualifying POST PELLET‑B or Front Line National Written Examination results within one year of application.
Written exam components include:
- Video‑based human relations test.
- Reading ability test.
- Written language ability test.
Applicants who achieve a passing score are placed on the city’s eligibility list. Candidates on the list must complete the POST Personal History Statement within the specified deadline to remain in the recruitment process.
Physical Agility Test
Successful candidates may be invited to a physical agility test composed of the following components:
- Agility Run: 99‑yard course in 34 seconds.
- Dummy Drag:
Lift and drag a 165‑pound dummy 25 feet in 10 seconds. - Fence Climb/Run:
Run 5 yards, climb a six‑foot fence, then run 25 yards in 15 seconds. - 1‑Mile Run:
Run 1 mile with no obstacles in 10 minutes. - Push‑Ups: 15 push‑ups in 1 minute.
Final Selection and Hiring
Final selection includes polygraph, background investigation, post‑offer psychological and medical examinations.
