Job Summary

Fire Prevention Engineer for the BWXT‑led Nuclear Laboratories Partners of Canada (NLPC) contract. The Engineer provides expert knowledge in fire protection and fire department emergency services, ensuring compliance with relevant fire protection codes and standards for equipment and systems. Responsibilities include reviewing new construction plans, inspecting compliance, examining construction documentation, and recommending building design and materials to prevent fires.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Honors) in Engineering or Applied Science from a recognized university.
  • Preferred degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, Electrical or Civil Engineering.
  • Eligible for licensure as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • Two or more years of experience working on fire protection systems or design preferred.
  • Registered with Professional Engineers Ontario or holds P.Eng. status in Canada.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate potential fire hazards and risks.
  • Understanding of relevant codes, standards, and regulations governing fire safety.
  • Analyze fire safety documentation for compliance and effectiveness.
  • Create, review, and maintain detailed fire safety documentation.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness in fire safety assessments and documentation.
  • Evaluate requests and assess their impact on fire safety.
  • Effectively communicate findings and recommendations regarding exemption requests.
  • Plan, organize/coordinate meetings and projects within the fire service and external groups.
  • Attention to detail, teamwork, problem‑solving, technical documentation and reporting, risk assessment and mitigation, workflow streamlining.
  • Good understanding of the National Building Code, National Fire Code, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and CSA N‑293, CSA‑N393 standards and their applications.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain Canadian security clearance.
  • Must reside near or be willing to relocate to the Chalk River, Ontario area.

Responsibilities

  • Complete fire safety assessments and interpret code requirements.
  • Complete or review FHAs; conduct and review fire hazard analyses and other fire safety documentation for compliance.
  • Describe conditions for inspecting and testing fire protection systems; assist in preparing/reviewing inspection, testing, and maintenance procedures for fire equipment/systems.
  • Conduct project inspections and witness tests of buildings and fire protection systems to determine compliance with plans, specifications, and applicable standards and regulations.
  • Assist with oversight of the site’s fire protection and fire department emergency services programs and their implementation.
  • Review adequacy of contractor fire protection programs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, Departmental Orders, standards, guides, and improved risk practices.
  • Provide technical expertise for the improvement of CRL fire protection equipment/systems and suitability for protection from fire.
  • Assist with fire investigations and other accident/incident investigations as required.
  • Plan and organize meetings and projects within the fire service and external groups.
  • Maintain proficiency in fire protection engineering and fire department emergency services concepts through continued education, training, and periodic review of fire protection codes and standards.
  • Evaluate and review requests for fire safety exemptions and equivalencies.
  • Prepare engineering documents such as Design Requirements, Design Descriptions, Work Activity Plans, Test Plans, and Test Reports.
  • Complete engineering calculations to support and confirm adequacy of detailed designs.
  • Advise on fire protection requirements to be incorporated in building design and construction.
  • Review plans and specifications to determine compliance with fire protection requirements of applicable standards and regulations.
  • Work as part of a team to design fire protection systems.
  • Check formal engineering drawings to ensure they convey the engineering design intent.
