POSITION

SUMMARY

As the Food Protection Specialist, the incumbent will work together with a team of other Environmental Health Specialists to promote and enforce environmental safety throughout Hancock County. The primary role of the Food Protection specialist is to ensure that food establishments, both static and mobile, are permitted in Hancock County and operate in compliance with the Indiana Department of Health Title 410 IAC 7-24.

In this role, the incumbent will have time split between both in‑office and out‑of‑office responsibilities. Food Protection Specialists act as a point of contact for food establishment owners and/or operators, thus, the incumbent must be able to communicate effectively with the public, in both face‑to‑face situations, and via email or telephone. Food Protection Specialists may also travel to conferences and meetings for state organizations, sometimes overnight.

POSITION

RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbent’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to food safety, protection, new food establishment plan review, food establishment inspection, and issuing food permits.

While the Food Protection Specialist will work predominately within Food Protection, Food Protection Specialists are members of the Environmental Health Division of the Hancock County Health Department and may be cross‑trained in other duties performed by the Environmental Health Division. These duties include but are not limited to residential onsite sewage design, inspection, and issuing permits, tattoo parlor inspection and issuing of permits, responding to housing code violation complaints and trash complaints, residential improvement review and approval/disapproval, pool permitting and inspections, processing and fulfilling Freedom of Information Act requests.

Incumbent maintains frequent contact with the public and may be exposed to difficult/agitated persons.

Performs related duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience
:
Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Environmental Science, or related field preferred. Equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the required knowledge base, skills, and abilities for this position will be considered. Must have working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation for the preparation of correspondence, documents, reports, and files.

Physical
:
Some bending, stooping, or kneeling required. Out‑of‑Office work may expose incumbent to the weather elements, including rain, snow, wind, cold temperatures, hot temperatures, sun exposure. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, although infrequently. In‑office work requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk at will, keyboarding, close vision, hearing sounds/communication, and speaking clearly.

Incumbent must possess a valid Indiana Driver’s License, a safe driving record, and have access to reliable personal transportation. Ability to meet all department hiring requirements, including passage of a criminal background check. Ability to comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug‑free workplace, and personal conduct. Currently possess or apply for and maintain membership in the Indiana Environmental Health Association.
