Applications are invited for a 1-2 PhD researcher position (outstanding MS applicants will also be considered) and/or 1 Postdoctoral Researcher in satellite-based hydrology and environmental research. The successful candidate will join the HEIRS Lab (Hydro-Environment Intelligent Remote Sensing Lab; https://jmpark183.wixsite.com/mysite) in the Department of Environmental Engineering at Korea National University of Transportation (KNUT), South Korea.

Our lab develops satellite- and model-based methods that integrate remote sensing and hydrometeorological data to monitor and predict water quantity, water quality, and hydrological extremes. Current research spans water quality estimation linked to carbon neutrality, high-resolution soil moisture and streamflow retrieval from SAR imagery, and drought prediction using multi-satellite snow information. The successful candidate will process multi-source satellite and reanalysis data, develop retrieval algorithms and machine-learning models, and contribute to water resource and disaster applications. The position is associated with government-funded R&D projects, and the detailed research scope will be discussed during the interview process.

Current Research Topics

  • Water quality estimation & carbon neutrality: retrieving water quality parameters by jointly using hydrometeorological data and satellite surface reflectance, and exploring their linkage to carbon neutrality
  • SAR-based hydrology: developing and validating algorithms for very-high-resolution soil moisture and streamflow estimation from SAR imagery (e.g., Sentinel-1)
  • Multi-satellite drought prediction: predicting drought using multi-satellite snow (snow cover / snow water equivalent) information
  • Cross-cutting methods: machine learning / deep learning (LSTM, Random Forest, LightGBM) for hydrological and remote-sensing time-series

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing and validating satellite retrieval algorithms (SAR-based soil moisture/streamflow, reflectance-based water quality, snow-based drought indices)
  • Processing and analyzing multi-source satellite and reanalysis data (e.g., Sentinel-1 SAR, optical reflectance, multi-satellite snow products, ERA5-Land)
  • Building hydrological and machine-learning models for water quantity, water quality, and drought/flood applications
  • Preparing research outputs, including SCIE journal papers, conference presentations, technical reports, and project deliverables
  • Supporting research project activities and collaborating with graduate and undergraduate students
  • Maintaining accurate data/analysis records and contributing to laboratory research discussions

Qualifications

Required:

  • PhD applicants: an MS degree (or expected completion before the start date) in environmental/civil engineering, geography, atmospheric science, geoscience, water resources, or a closely related field
  • MS applicants: a BS degree in a related field with strong academic records
  • Programming ability in Python or MATLAB
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team
  • Willingness to work on-site at KNUT in Chungju, South Korea

Preferred:

  • Research experience in satellite remote sensing or hydrological modeling
  • Familiarity with SAR (Sentinel-1), optical reflectance, snow products, or reanalysis (ERA5-Land) datasets
  • Experience with machine learning / deep learning for geoscientific or time-series data
  • Experience handling large geospatial datasets (GIS, NetCDF, Google Earth Engine)
  • Experience with government-funded research, technical report writing, journal publications, or conference presentations.
