The core competence of the Group is a large experimental activity on combustion and cryogenic fuels, supported by key industrial partners.

About the Role:

The Research Fellow or Research Assistant will engage in high-quality applied research within the Centre for Aeronautics, Propulsion, and Power. The post-holder will lead the design, development and operation of novel fuel experimental research facilities. They will act as a primary contact for rig build, safety assurance, and day-to-day operation of complex high pressure/temperature experimental rigs supporting research projects. The role requires active collaboration with academic staff, industry partners, and research teams. Responsibilities include conducting experiments, analysing data, preparing reports, and delivering presentations to stakeholders, including participation in conferences. This is a full-time, on-site role based in Cranfield, UK.

About You:

You will be educated to PhD level (or be nearing completion). You must have experience of experimental rig design and development, including control, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems. You will demonstrate knowledge of health and safety practice, including risk assessment, COSHH, and safe operation of high-risk facilities involving electrical systems and pressurised or flammable gases. You will have the proven ability to work autonomously, maintain research documentation, and provide leadership within a laboratory or test-rig environment.

Essential Criteria:

  • PhD in a relevant field (or near completion for Research Assistant).
  • Strong research skills, including data collection, analysis, and experimental methods.
  • Proficiency in technical writing and presenting research findings.
  • Knowledge of and experience in experimental methods for multiphase flow or cryogenic fuels, in particular rig design and build.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Project management abilities to ensure timely delivery of research objectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous experience in professional or academic research roles is an advantage.
