Job Description

Purpose

The Head of Programmes and Delivery is a new role to provide strategic and operational leadership across all programme streams, ensuring high-quality implementation, staff accountability, programme alignment, and consistent delivery across regions. Reporting to the CEO, the role will be responsible for strengthening programme management systems and supporting team leadership.

The successful candidate will be an experienced programme leader who is committed to the positive education outcomes for the children and young people of South Africa.

Please note that we are unable to provide financial assistance for relocation expenses. Candidates applying from outside the Johannesburg area or reasonable commuting distance will be required to fund their own relocation should they be successful.

Roles and Responsibilities

Programme Leadership And Oversight

  • Provide strategic leadership across all programme streams and regions, ensuring aligned, high-quality delivery against organisational priorities, donor commitments, budgets, and KPIs.
  • Drive integration, consistency, and continuous improvement across programme implementation and delivery systems.

People Management And Accountability

  • Lead, support, and develop programme managers and teams.
  • Strengthen accountability, performance management, collaboration, and leadership capability while fostering a high-performing, values-driven culture.

Operational Management

  • Oversee programme planning, implementation tracking, reporting cycles, and operational coordination.
  • Strengthen systems, workflows, and risk management practices to improve delivery and organisational efficiency.

Mel

  • Strengthen monitoring, reporting, and data quality in collaboration with the M&E function.
  • Use programme insights to support decision-making, continuous improvement, and organisational learning.

Donor Management

  • Support donor engagement, reporting and presentation.
  • Ensure donor commitments are delivered effectively and represent the organisation in programme and operational engagements when required.

Stakeholder & Partnership Management

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with strategic partners such as district government and tertiary institutions.

Financial Management And Governance

  • Oversee programme budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation to support sustainable and effective delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with organisational policies, financial controls and governance requirements.

Qualifications And Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification Education, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Public Management, or a related field
  • At least 5 years’ senior leadership experience combined with programme management gained within the education or non-profit sector
  • Proven track record of leading multi-site and/or multi-programme operations within an organisation
  • Experience at building stakeholder relations, donor management and supporting fundraising efforts

  • Ability to translate organisational strategy into clear operational execution
  • Proven ability to lead a team, holding high standards while maintaining a positive and collaborative team culture
  • Working knowledge and understanding of budget management and compliance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, incl. report writing & presenting
  • Excellent team player who can contribute to a productive working environment.
  • Outstanding time management and organisational skills.
  • Data-driven with the ability to use insights to inform decision-making
  • Adaptable, resilient, and solutions-oriented with strong professional judgement
