Position: Investigative Program Specialist (POLYGRAPH EXAMINER)
Summary
The Investigative Program Specialist (Polygraph Examiner) is a GS‑12/13 position within the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Professional Responsibility, Credibility Assessment Division. The role supports Federal, State, and local agencies by conducting polygraph examinations for administrative, civil, counterintelligence, and criminal investigations.

Compensation
Base salary ranges from $97,108 (GS‑12, Step
1) to $150,119 (GS‑13, Step 10). Salary is adjusted for locality pay or a special rate as applicable.
Duties
- Conduct all types of polygraph examinations.
- Coordinate, plan, and administer polygraph examinations.
- Conduct pretest interviews to assess candidate suitability.
- Evaluate physical and psychological suitability for testing.
- Prepare accurate, concise, and objective investigation reports.
- Optional court testimony in rare occasions.
- Conduct extended testing to resolve undecided issues or confirm admissions.
Qualifications
- U.S. citizenship. Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
- Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- At least two years of investigative experience with a recognized U.S. Government agency or other law enforcement agency.
- Successful completion of a Psycho physiological Detection of Deception (PDD) polygraph examination.
- Minimum age 25 years.
- Certified by the National Center for Credibility Assessment (NCCA) or qualifying to attend the Basic Federal Polygraph Training Program.
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, including selecting polygraph techniques, analyzing physiological data, conducting in‑depth interrogations, identifying criminal or misconduct case issues, and preparing forensic reports.
- Knowledge of the rules of evidence, criminal procedure, constitutional rights, and investigative matters.
Telework
Telework is not permitted for this position.
Security Clearance
Position requires a Top Secret or higher clearance as applicable.
Background Investigation
Applicants will undergo a thorough background investigation. Non‑CBP law‑enforcement employees may be required to complete a polygraph exam as part of the pre‑employment process.
Retention Incentive
This position is eligible for a Polygraph Retention Incentive.
