The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to drive the delivery of a high value, complex capital works programme, guiding a large multi-disciplinary team.

Wellington Electricity is making significant investments in its network, entering one of its largest periods of asset investment in many years. To support the delivery of a more extensive works programme, prepare for a new Price Path and respond to changing customer needs, it has introduced a refreshed delivery model. This aims to enhance visibility, coordination, and efficiency in both the planning and delivery of an expanding programme of work.

As Manager – CAPEX, you will play a pivotal role in embedding and operationalising this important structural change delivering lasting benefits for Wellington Electricity’s customers now and into the future.

The Role

Leading 5 direct reports and 16 indirect reports, you will be responsible for the overall success of the CAPEX works delivery programme, comprising of:

  • Complex Projects
  • Network Integrity and Reinforcement Projects
  • Exclusive CAPEX Projects
  • Customer Initiated Works

Operating within an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction model, your team will ensure projects are effectively scoped, programmed, and delivered on time and within budget, while managing risks and providing technical support throughout the project lifecycle.

In partnering with key Service Providers, you will lead the 24-month capital programme, and drive its strategic delivery, including:

  • Supporting and mentoring a team of technically skilled Engineering Delivery Managers
  • Overseeing, monitoring and reporting on overall programme progress
  • Engaging with Service Providers to manage tenders and service contracts
  • Ensuring approved project methodologies are followed to achieve best practice delivery
  • Upholding health and safety standards, including incident resolution and leading quality audits

In addition to managing a range of internal and external stakeholders, you will contribute to the broader Service Delivery Leadership Team, ensuring workstreams are appropriately resourced and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.

About You

An experienced leader within distribution, transmission or generation you will bring strong expertise within project and / or engineering delivery. This will enable you to preside on technical forums while influencing peers and senior leaders.

Balancing programme leadership, with technical engineering and construction management, you maintain a strategic perspective while retaining the ability to engage at a detailed, hands-on level when required. You will be adept at managing performance across complex programmes, including outputs, cost, quality, and risk.

With demonstrated experience in developing, mentoring, and supporting teams you’ll have a proven track record of leading and embedding change while also effectively managing 3rd party providers.

A tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering is essential, with a formal project management qualification or certification (such as PRINCE2 or PMP) being advantageous.
