Position Summary

Primary purpose:
Bring resolution to high‑dollar taxpayer collection cases by conducting investigative research, interpreting and enforcing North Carolina tax laws, and actively collecting liabilities due to the state.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigative research on delinquent tax cases.
  • Interpret and enforce North Carolina tax laws, regulations, and revenue laws.
  • Actively collect taxpayer liabilities.
  • Request special assessments.
  • Work with taxpayers to meet criteria for installment agreements.
  • Submit offers in compromise and perform financial adjustments.
  • Timely and accurately submit cases for action by the Special Enforcement Unit.
  • Maintain impeccable communication and decision‑making skills for complex cases.

Qualifications

  • Minimum education:

    Bachelor’s degree in Business/Public Administration, Economics, Accounting, or related field from an accredited institution.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in accounting or collection work involving public contact; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of revenue laws, procedures, and methodologies for determining tax liability and administering tax types.
  • Experience analyzing highly complex collection problems and determining proper application of revenue laws.
  • Demonstrated ability to act professionally during difficult, contentious, or stressful situations.
  • Recruitment range: $50,088 – $87,654 (effective July
    12025).
  • Position subject to federal and state criminal background checks that may include fingerprinting and tax compliance verification.
