The City of Aspen is hiring for the following seasonal Parks and Open Space position:
Job Title: Parks & Open Space Ranger
Department: Parks and Open Space
Classification: Non-Exempt, Seasonal
Pay Grade: $23.28/min – $25.61/mid – $27.93/max
Position Summary: City of Aspen Parks & Open Space Rangers serve as the eyes and ears of the Parks Department and other City departments. Rangers patrol trails and natural areas daily on foot or bicycle, engaging with the public, educating visitors, and monitoring natural resources. This highly public-facing role requires strong communication skills, emotional awareness, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Rangers help enforce regulations, respond to emergent incidents, support park and trail maintenance, and provide excellent customer service to trail users. Collaboration with Pitkin County Rangers and local event organizers is part of the role, as is occasional code enforcement, including court testimony and judicial follow-up when required. The core mission of Rangers is to protect natural resources, ensure visitor safety, and provide high-quality community service.
Supervision Exercised and Received: Position works under the general supervision of the Parks & Open Space Senior Ranger and the Open Space and Natural Resources Manager.
Essential Job Functions:
Patrol and Enforcement
- Patrols, on foot or bicycle, the City’s Parks, Open Spaces and Trails to educate visitors, enforce regulations and monitor natural resources.
- Performs daily patrols of parks, open spaces and trail for rules, regulations, enforcement, education and outreach to include talking to pet owners about cleaning up after their animals and enforcing Skate park regulations.
- Communicates effectively with the public in regards to both emergent situations and customer service type contacts.
- Engages with event coordinators to monitor and patrol special events within city limits.
- Picks up trash and animal waste to ensure clean natural spaces
- Works alone and/or with others for long periods of time.
- Assigns verbal and written warnings and written citations against individuals not adhering to regulations of these areas.
- Issues verbal and written warnings and citations for violations of regulations.
- Prepares court testimony regarding legal action for such enforcement, when required.
- Understands and is cross trained in Pitkin County Open Space and Trails rules and regulations.
- Responsible for education and enforcement of County rules and regulations on jointly owned open space and trails located in the County.
Natural Resource Management
- Assists with Open Space and Natural Resource programs monitoring and recording information such as wildlife sightings, weed infestations and human use patterns.
- Protects the natural resources, including vegetation and wildlife.
