A highly respected federal cultural institution is seeking a Federal Payroll Specialist to join its payroll team during a planned transition resulting from the retirement of a long-tenured employee. This is a unique opportunity to work directly alongside the current incumbent, who has successfully managed the role for more than 25 years, allowing for extensive training and knowledge transfer before their departure.
Supporting approximately 750 employees, this position plays a critical role in the administration of bi-weekly payroll operations within a federal environment. The organization recently implemented a new time and attendance system and is seeking a detail-oriented payroll professional to help support the transition while ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing.
Unlike many traditional payroll positions, this role focuses primarily on reviewing, auditing, and submitting time and attendance data through the National Finance Center (NFC) rather than performing complex payroll calculations. The position offers an excellent opportunity for professionals with federal payroll experience who are looking to leverage their expertise in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Reviewing and auditing employee time and attendance records
- Processing and submitting payroll data through NFC
- Ensuring compliance with federal payroll regulations and procedures
- Assisting employees and management with payroll-related inquiries
- Supporting a recently implemented time and attendance system
- Maintaining payroll records and documentation
- Collaborating closely with HR, Finance, and management to ensure accurate payroll processing
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience supporting payroll operations in a federal government environment
- Familiarity with NFC (National Finance Center) or other federal payroll systems
- Knowledge of federal payroll policies, procedures, and timekeeping practices
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
Additional details:
- Temporary assignment anticipated to last approximately 4–6 months
- Strong possibility for temp-to-perm conversion for the right individual
- Opportunity to train directly with the current incumbent before their retirement in September
- Small, collaborative team with significant visibility and impact
- Candidates seeking a temp-to-perm opportunity should expect an onsite work schedule in Washington, DC
- Only candidates seeking a short-term, temporary opportunity (~ 4-6 months) can be fully remote
This is a unique opportunity to step into a highly specialized federal payroll role while supporting a nationally recognized institution dedicated to preserving and sharing some of the country's most important cultural and historical assets.
