Position: PERMIT TECHNICIAN
Position Overview
Under general supervision, performs a variety of paraprofessional support involved in the acceptance, review, and dissemination of a wide variety of sign permit applications and documents. Provides information to customers on sign permit requirements, plan review process, codes, ordinances and inspection procedures.

Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
Responsibilities / Duties
- Practice great customer service skills.
- Assist all customers to the best of your ability.
- Answer a multi-line phone.
- Record, log, compile and maintain various permit-related files, data, documents, plans and reports.
- Scan and upload permit documentation into the system.
- Communicate with customers via email, phone and in person.
- Understand the functions of all sections of Sign Administration/Building Code Enforcement and respond to customer questions on procedure, application requirements and status of permit application.
- Recognize permit system issues and submit Service Now Tickets and/or facilitate remedies.
- Monitor the Q-Flow Service Console.
- Perform other duties as required.
Working Conditions
The position is physically comfortable most of the time with occasional periods of stooping, bending and/or light lifting of materials up to 10 pounds. In the Houston Permitting Center, the position may require lifting of moderately heavy items, such as plans up to 40 pounds. This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier III Level.
Minimum Requirements Educational Requirements
High school diploma or GED.
Experience Requirements
Two years of experience as a Permit Technician Aide or in customer service. An associate degree may be substituted for the experience requirement.
License Requirements
None.
Preferences
Knowledge of the following systems: IPermits, Project Dox, Q-Flow, ILMS. Knowledge of how to research using HCAD, ILMS and Google.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants if such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. Pay Grade 15.
