Position
The Police Communications Operator position with the Pennsylvania State Police offers a chance to support vital public safety operations across the Commonwealth. This role places you in an active environment where clear communication helps guide emergency response. Your work uses your communication skills to assist callers and guide information to Troopers handling urgent situations.
Responsibilities
- Emergency Call Handling:
Receive calls from the public and gather key details to determine priority and response needs - Incident Coordination:
Dispatch information to Troopers and relay updates using radio, telephone, and computer systems - Information Management:
Access and maintain records in database systems - Public Assistance:
Respond to administrative questions and assist station visitors by providing information or arranging contact with a Trooper - Training Support:
Participate in communications training and assist in guiding new operators on procedures and practices
Work Schedule and Additional Information
- Full‑time employment, 40 hours per week
- Work hours involve rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays
- No telework option
- Starting salary may be non‑negotiable in some cases
Qualifications
- Two years experience using two‑way radio, multi‑line telephone, or computer‑aided dispatch systems; or
- Two years experience using computer systems for entering, updating, and retrieving information; or
- Completion of 60 college credits; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training
Special Requirements
- Clear, firm voice with no major speech, hearing, or visual impairments that would interfere with communication or use of equipment
- Obtain an active Public Safety Telecommunicator certification from the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials within the probationary period and maintain it during employment
- Obtain active Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) and Pennsylvania Justice Network (JNET) certifications within the probationary period and maintain them during employment
Legal Requirements
- Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements
- Submit a Report of Medications for screening by the State Police Medical Officer before placement in this job title
