Part‑Time Telecommunicator
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our team as a Part‑Time Telecommunicator. This position plays a vital role in ensuring effective communication and support for the Kernersville Police Department.
Number of hours: 24 hours per week during the training phase, with flexibility to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of prior experience as a telecommunicator.
Certifications: Must have DCI Modules 1, 2 and 3 certifications or be willing to obtain these during the training phase.
Responsibilities
- Operate a multi‑line telephone system, receive emergency and non‑emergency calls, obtain, evaluate, and take needed action, access language line for non‑English speakers, operate TTY and Text‑to‑911 systems.
- Operate and monitor a multi‑channel radio system, dispatch officers to scenes, operate mobile dispatch center, use appropriate codes and signals, check status of officers, dispatch alarms, monitor emergency channel for distress.
- Enter call information into CAD, record stolen vehicles, wanted/missing persons, prepare messages, update database with business locations, emergency call‑outs, knox box locations, alerts.
- Monitor Police Department video security system.
- Maintain database of residential security checks for out‑of‑town residents.
- Monitor Doppler radar and advise of severe weather.
- Communicate with dispatchers from local, state and federal agencies to coordinate response.
- Use law‑enforcement databases to gather information needed by officers and enter accurate data into database.
- Assist in training new telecommunicators and record training progress.
- Operate Dictaphone, research past phone calls and radio traffic.
- Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of Communications Center functions and related equipment.
- Thinks clearly and acts quickly in emergency situations.
- Controls telephone conversations to obtain accurate information.
- Receives and carries out instructions from emergency responders.
- Speaks clearly with good diction.
- Uses specialized law‑enforcement software to enter and retrieve data.
Physical Requirements
- Perform basic life operational support functions (standing, walking, reaching, talking).
- Perform sedentary work, exert up to 10 pounds lightly or occasionally.
- Possess visual acuity to operate a computer terminal, inspect small defects, and do extensive reading.
This position is classified as safety sensitive per the Town’s Personnel Policy.
