Our client is seeking a highly motivated and resourceful Engineer as part of the Natrium program. our client is in the early stages of implementing a nuclear packaging and transportation program including as first step procuring the various containers to be used for shipping radioactive fuel at different stages of the fuel fabrication cycle.

In this role, the Engineer will be a key player in the the program, working with Procurement, Fuel Fabrication, Quality Assurance, Suppliers, Reactor Site Operations, and other organizations both internal and external to the client. The Engineer will report within the Natrium Fuel Design and Supply team. The Engineer will work as part of a high functioning team of engineers and scientists focused on developing the design of next generation advanced nuclear reactors.

Tasks:

Actively participate in the development of the nuclear packaging and transportation program to ensure of equipment and services readiness in compliance with Natrium's schedule needs, including:

Packaging-related activities:

  • Evaluate packaging needs based on different Natrium scenarios to ensure that equipment will be available to support reactor operations
  • Interface with Procurement and Contract Administrators from procurement through delivery of the shipping containers.
  • Interface with the teams from the client and various companies through design, testing, licensing and fabrication of the shipping containers.
  • Interface with the teams from the client and various companies for the use of the shipping containers.
  • Support onsite oversight during fabrication of shipping containers, as needed.
  • Support the client 10 CFR50 QA program in all packaging-related activities.
  • Help ensure compliance with 10CFR 71 and 49 CFR regulations.
  • Develop specifications and testing documentation.
  • Ensure that schedules related to shipping containers are maintained.
  • Participate in design, procedure, and test reviews

Transportation-related activities:

  • Assist in development of the client's strategy for procurement of transportation services in collaboration with procurement and other stakeholders.
  • Participate actively in the client's nuclear material transportation risk management plan.
  • Support the development of safety and security transportation procedures in compliance with Class 7 regulations.
  • Act as the client's point of contact for all technical aspects related to nuclear material packaging and transportation.
  • Influence client's development of a fleet logistics program to support scaling of Natrium reactor deployment

Key Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education – Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent preferred, but degrees in other disciplines will be considered.
  • Candidate should have 2-10 years of engineering experience.
  • Familiarity with nuclear industry and terminology from experience with a nuclear logistics provider, commercial nuclear power station, fuel fabricator, National Lab, US Navy Nuclear program, or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and interpret regulations from multiple government entities having purview over shipment of radioactive materials.
  • Familiarity with hazardous material transport truck transport, especially Class 7 materials, is desirable.
  • Familiarity with nuclear fuel fabrication, shipping container design and fabrication, and/or transportation of radioactive materials is desirable.
  • Familiarity with austenitic steel fabrication.
  • Comfortable working with Regulatory Guides.
  • Ability to critically evaluate detailed engineering models and drawings.
  • Ability to write high-quality documents such as engineering documents, transportation guides and procedures, risk management plans, etc.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work with minimum direction to solve challenging problems.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently during a given work week with a distributed team.
