The Opportunity
Our client is seeking an experienced environmental leader to step into the role of Regional Manager, Environmental Sciences. Reporting to the Manager, Environment & Lands, this position will lead a team of environmental professionals responsible for developing and advancing strategic environmental programs across a large industrial site and surrounding areas influenced by historical operations.
This role is focused on long-term environmental planning, remediation, emissions reduction, water and ecosystem risk management, and stakeholder engagement. The successful candidate will work closely with internal operational teams as well as external partners, including regulators, Indigenous groups, local communities, and government agencies.
This position partners closely with another environmental leadership role focused more heavily on operational compliance, permitting, environmental systems, and site-based monitoring and reporting. Together, these roles support both the strategic and operational environmental performance of the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strong safety leadership and champion all safety, environmental, and site procedures
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of environmental professionals across multiple technical disciplines
- Support annual planning processes and oversee multimillion-dollar environmental program budgets
- Direct remediation programs related to historically impacted areas in accordance with applicable contaminated sites regulations
- Oversee groundwater investigation and remediation initiatives associated with historical industrial activities
- Lead implementation of large-scale remediation plans designed to address the legacy impacts of historic air emissions across a broad environmental management area
- Advance ecosystem and biodiversity initiatives, including programs focused on wildlands, habitat management, and broader land stewardship strategies
- Represent our client in local health and environmental committees and support community-based environmental and public health initiatives
- Guide aquatic monitoring programs to assess and improve the health of nearby river systems and aquatic environments
- Develop and execute strategies to reduce community exposure to sulphur dioxide and other priority emissions, while balancing regulatory expectations and operational requirements
- Lead initiatives focused on reducing ambient metal emissions within the local community, including airborne lead and fugitive dust
- Support environmental risk management strategies related to in-ground water retaining structures and stormwater infrastructure
- Oversee noise mitigation and monitoring programs intended to reduce community impact
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with regulators, Indigenous communities, local stakeholders, and government representatives
- Prepare and review high-quality technical reports, regulatory submissions, and public-facing materials
Qualifications
- 10 to 15 years of progressive environmental leadership experience within heavy industry, such as mining, smelting, refining, or other complex industrial operations
- Degree in environmental science, engineering, or another relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Strong background in environmental strategy, remediation, risk management, and regulatory engagement
- Demonstrated success leading multiple environmental programs and projects at once
- Strong working knowledge of relevant provincial and federal environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks
- Proven ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships, including regulators, Indigenous groups, and local communities
- Excellent leadership, communication, planning, and organizational skills
- Experience preparing regulatory submissions, technical documentation, and external communications materials
- Familiarity with large-scale metals processing or comparable industrial operations would be considered a strong asset
