About The Job
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Researcher: Energy Economist in the Energy Centre within the Smart Places cluster. The incumbent will support socio-economic research on South Africa¿s Just Energy Transition, with a particular focus on impact assessment, energy value-chain analysis, jobs and livelihoods implications, and skills demand linked to emerging low-carbon industries. The role will contribute evidence-based analysis to inform policy, planning, investment decisions and transition pathways for the South African energy sector. This position is based in Pretoria and reports to the Research Group Leader.

Key Responsibilities
- Conduct socio-economic impact assessments of energy transition pathways, projects and policies, including distributional effects on workers, communities, municipalities and industries.
- Analyse energy transition value chains, including renewable energy, storage, transmission, green industrialisation and related supply-chain opportunities.
- Assess jobs, livelihoods and labour-market implications of the Just Energy Transition, including job creation, job displacement, job quality and regional employment effects.
- Support skills demand assessments by identifying occupational shifts, reskilling needs and training requirements across energy transition value chains.
- Collect, analyse and interpret quantitative and qualitative socio-economic data from government, industry, labour, community and research sources.
- Contribute to technical reports, policy briefs, client presentations and project proposals that translate complex economic evidence into clear recommendations for the energy sector.
Qualifications, Skills And Experience
- An Honours degree in economics, development economics, energy economics, public policy, science, engineering or a related field from a recognized university, with at least three years¿ experience in socio-economic analysis, energy economics, just transition research or economic impact assessment.
- Experience in socio-economic impact assessment, value-chain analysis, labour-market analysis, energy policy, consulting, government, utility, research or economic analysis environments.
- Demonstrated ability to collect, manage and analyse socio-economic, employment, skills, industrial and regional development data.
- Experience with Computable General Equilibrium (CGE), Social Accounting Matrix (SAM), input-output, cost-benefit, labour-market or value-chain modelling will be advantageous.
- High quality writing and analytical skills with an ability to distil key messages from complex source data/reports.
- Ability to present technical work to colleagues and to external audiences,
- Ability to work as part of a team, influencing decisions and reacting positively to challenges,
- All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
