Duties
In This Position, You Will
- Investigate accidents involving personnel, visitors and volunteers; prepare and/or obtain reports and necessary documentation, information from witnesses, pictures, etc.; analyze accident statistical data and develop remedial measures when indicated in conjunction with OPS and OSHEM.
- Responsible for the coordination of the safety program for staff, visitors, and volunteers; serve as technical advisor on safety related issues to the facility staff; evaluate, through on-site inspections, the level of safety and environmental health at the facility; originate and recommend corrective action if needed; insure compliance with all applicable codes and standards.
- Develop and present safety training programs for new as well as existing employees; promote activities for maintaining interest in accident prevention, including publication of statistics for the facility; obtain and display safety posters and charts; write and disseminate information to employees and volunteers on the safety program, as required; develop training material for supervisors and employees; compile and summarize information for inclusion in Safety reports to the facility Director and to OSHEM.
- Develop and present the SISCSISC Hazard Communication Program; keeping current a chemical inventory for all facility divisions; and keeping current on MSDS library for all facility divisions and ensuring proper labeling and storage for all chemicals in the facility.

Individual Occupational Requirements
Education: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study — safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

Experience
Specialized Experience: Experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
OR
Certificates
Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Health Physicist (CHP), or similar certification that included successful completion of a written examination meets the requirements for GS-5. Applicants may also qualify for higher grade levels based on their education and/or experience.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education listed below.
GS – 11 – Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as assisting in conducting safety inspections to determine compliance with regulations and standards; assisting in investigating accidents and interviewing employees and supervisors about safety and occupational health issues; preparing reports of findings and recommendations; and presenting safety training programs.
Or Education
PH.D or equivalent doctoral degree or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M in safety or occupation health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciples: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications.
GS – 12 – Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as conducting safety inspections to determine compliance with regulations and standards and providing technical advice; writing and conducting Occupational Safety and Health training; investigating accidents and interviewing employees and supervisors about safety and occupational health issues and preparing corresponding reports; assisting in the development and management of safety programs; and managing medical surveillance compliance (respiratory protection, hearing conservation program, etc.).
