PURPOSE AND CONTEXT OF ROLE

The Sales Manager is responsible for leading and growing the commercial sales function at Gunlake Quarries. The role encompasses direct sales, Key Account Management, sales team leadership, and the development of the systems, processes and capability needed to support the business at scale.

Gunlake has grown significantly over the past 15 years, building a strong customer base and commercial reputation based on quality of products and technical expertise that forms a solid foundation for the next phase of growth. This role is about building on that foundation bringing fresh energy, modern commercial discipline and a genuine respect for what has been built.

The successful candidate will inherit a strong platform and be expected to systematically strengthen and grow it. A structured handover ensures full continuity across current process, key accounts and relationships.

 

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Sales Leadership & Team Management

•     Lead, manage, and develop the sales team, providing regular coaching and fostering a high-performance culture

•     Conduct regular one on ones, team reviews and performance conversations to support individual growth and accountability

•     Build team capability through structured onboarding, training, and development of sales skills and product knowledge

•     Create a team environment that reflects Gunlake’s values

•     Manage team workload, territory coverage and customer allocation to ensure consistent account management

Sales Systems & Process Development

•     Audit and assess the existing sales processes, tools and frameworks inherited from the current structure

•     Identify opportunities to formalise, improve, and scale existing practices, building on what works rather than replacing it

•     Work closely with senior management team to implement or enhance sales management systems to improve pipeline visibility, forecasting accuracy and customer data quality

•     Develop standardised quoting, account review, and customer communication processes that can be consistently applied across the team.

•     Understand and sell the technical specifications of our products, ensure that we can continue to develop solutions for customers.

Business Development

•     Identify, target, and convert new customers across civil construction, infrastructure, road, concrete, and government sectors

•     Develop and execute a proactive sales pipeline tracking prospects from initial contact through to account establishment

•     Respond to tender opportunities, prepare competitive quotes and support formal submissions in collaboration with transport and operations teams

•     Represent Gunlake Quarries at industry events, networking functions, and site visits to build brand presence and market intelligence

Account Management

•     Manage and grow key customer accounts, maintaining high levels of satisfaction and long-term loyalty

•     Conduct regular customer reviews to understand forward programs, forecast demand, and identify upsell or retention risks

•     Serve as the primary commercial escalation point for key accounts, resolving disputes and managing expectations professionally

Commercial & Pricing

•     Maintain a thorough understanding of Gunlake’s product range and pricing structure.

•     Enhance margin through effective pricing strategies and execution of these.

•     Negotiate supply agreements, pricing adjustments and specific customer agreements

•     Monitor competitor pricing and market conditions, providing recommendations to management on commercial positioning

Internal Collaboration

•     Work closely with transport, technical and operations teams to ensure customer commitments are aligned with quarry capacity and scheduling

•     Liaise with transport and production teams to ensure accurate order fulfilment and timely delivery

•     Contribute to product and commercial discussions by feeding back market intelligence and customer requirements

 OTHER DUTIES

The role may evolve over time as the business grows. The Sales Manager is expected to assist with other reasonable duties as directed by management, consistent with the seniority of the position.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications

Experience

•     Experience in a sales role, with at least 5 years in a team leadership or sales management capacity

•     Proven track record of new business development, account growth, and managing a high-performing sales team

•     Background in construction materials, civil infrastructure, logistics, or a related industrial sector is highly regarded

•     Exposure to tendering, estimating, or project-based selling is an advantage

•     Quarry or extractive industry experience is beneficial however not required, full product and technical induction will be provided by the outgoing Sales Manager

Knowledge

•     Understanding of the NSW civil construction and infrastructure market

•     Familiarity with commercial negotiation

•     Strong leadership presence, able to set direction, hold a team accountable, and develop individuals at different stages of their careers

•     Systematic thinker with the ability to assess existing processes, identify improvements, and implement change without disrupting what is working

•     Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Credibility with site managers, estimators and senior procurement leads alike

•     Ability to identify opportunity, assess risk, and negotiate outcomes that work for both parties

•     Strong verbal and written communication including proposals, reports, and customer facing correspondence

•     Self-motivated and capable of managing competing priorities across a team and a personal portfolio

•     Resilient, adaptable, and energetic. Comfortable operating in a fast-moving operational environment

•     A collaborative team player who brings fresh thinking while respecting the foundations that have made Gunlake successful

•     Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel throughout the quarry sales regions
