Tech Correspondent Jobs in Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand at Stuff
Title: Tech Correspondent
Company: Stuff
Location: Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
Job Description
Technology is reshaping how we live, learn, work and participate in democracy. Artificial intelligence is transforming the world around us. Algorithms influence what we see and believe. And global technology companies now hold enormous power in the digital ecosystem.
At Stuff Limited, we believe the public deserves journalism that explains these systems clearly, looks at the power dynamics at play, and helps people understand how technology is shaping their lives.
We’re looking for an exceptional Tech Correspondent to lead this coverage.
This is a rare opportunity for a senior journalist to shape one of the most important editorial agendas in New Zealand. You’ll lead ambitious reporting on the intersection of technology, artificial intelligence and power setting the agenda for investigations, explanatory journalism and breaking news across the newsroom.
This is a senior editorial role, combining editorial vision with hands-on journalism.
You’ll lead coverage examining three defining shifts in New Zealand’s digital landscape:
- The growing relationship between government and technology power from regulation and procurement to data use, surveillance and dependence on global tech platforms.
- Technology’s impact on children and young people including online safety, wellbeing, education and algorithmic environments.
- The rise of misinformation and disinformation, how it spreads, who benefits and how it shapes public behaviour and democratic decision-making.
Working across the newsroom, you’ll ensure Stuff produces clear, authoritative and high-impact journalism that helps New Zealanders understand the systems shaping modern life.
What you’ll do
- Set the national editorial agenda for Technology, AI & Power.
- Lead major investigations, explanatory series and long-form journalism.
- Break exclusive stories about technology’s influence across politics, business, education and society.
- Work closely with reporters, editors and the investigations team to uncover systemic issues.
- Translate complex technologies from algorithms to AI models into stories that are accessible, engaging and meaningful.
- Experiment with innovative storytelling formats across digital, audio and video.
- Monitor audience insights and help grow engagement with in-depth journalism.
- Represent Stuff in conversations with experts, academics and industry leaders.
- Mentor and support journalists developing expertise in technology reporting.
What you’ll bring
We’re looking for a journalist with curiosity, authority and the ability to tackle complex issues with clarity and rigour.
- A strong track record of original, public-interest journalism.
- A deep interest in how technology intersects with power, democracy and society.
- The ability to explain complicated systems simply and compellingly.
- Experience leading or contributing to major investigations or agenda-setting reporting.
- Excellent editorial judgement and confidence handling sensitive or high-stakes stories.
- Strong knowledge of media law and editorial standards.
- The ability to interpret audience insights and use them to shape coverage.
- A collaborative mindset and the ability to build trusted source networks.
Experience covering technology, politics, public policy or investigations would be highly regarded.
