The Brookline Center for Community Mental Health (The Center) is a leading nonprofit mental health organization based in Brookline, Massachusetts, dedicated to promoting mental health, emotional well-being, and equitable access to care for children, adolescents, adults, and families statewide. Governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, the organization has served the community for more than six decades through high-quality clinical care, innovative school-based programs, and pioneering models that strengthen mental health systems locally and nationally.

In addition to providing comprehensive outpatient mental health services, The Center develops and manages innovative prevention and intervention programs designed to address emerging mental health needs, particularly for young people and underserved communities. Through initiatives such as BRYT, COMPASS, CEDAR, M-PATH, and other programs, The Center has earned national recognition for advancing effective school-based, community focused, and clinical mental health supports and expanding access to care across Massachusetts and beyond.

The Center provides or facilitates more than 33,000 visits and employs approximately 130 staff members, including a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, educators, consultants, and program leaders. Operating on an annual budget of approximately $20 million, The Center is supported by a diverse mix of public grants and contracts, third-party insurance reimbursements, private service agreements, and individual and institutional philanthropic investments.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Center is seeking their next leader. Reporting to the Board, this strategic and inspiring executive will lead the organization through its next phases of growth. The Center is uniquely positioned to continue the evolution of our community mental health programs while bringing scale to initiatives serving a population outside of our local community that help to transform mental health care delivery system.

We seek an individual with an inclusive, collaborative and flexible leadership style and 10+ years of direct experience in progressive leadership roles in a non-profit, community-based health care delivery organization. The CEO will guide and lead the organization in developing innovative programming while sustaining its deeply held community-focused mission. Familiarity with behavioral health, provider contracting with third parties, revenue cycle and financial management, state and federal health care structures, and development activities are strongly preferred.

The CEO will report to the President of the Board of Directors and supports the Board in carrying out their responsibilities. They lead a senior management team that includes the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief of Strategic Partnerships, Chief Development Officer, Chief of Staff and six other Director level staff, all who share leadership of the clinical and administrative team of over 100 full- and part-time employees.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership and Vision

  • Ensure that The Center’s mission and values are embodied in its organizational culture and service delivery
  • Own the refinement and implementation of a Board approved three-year strategic plan
  • Possess knowledge of the evolving methods for health care delivery and operations, including the potential for use of artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual care delivery or telehealth
  • Continuing development of the Innovation Institute and support of new methods of delivering high quality mental health care
  • In partnership with Board and staff, develop and implement short- and long-range strategic priorities in concert with organizational vision and consistent with the strategic plan
  • Ensure that both strategic vision and day-to-day operations remain responsive to community needs.
  • Attract, develop and retain highly qualified clinical and administrative staff who work collaboratively across all program areas.

Development and External Relations

  • Oversee, develop, and coordinate the management of the Center’s primary external relationships with government officials, public and private funders, community partners, collaborators, and individual supporters
  • Serve as a primary policy and advocacy spokesperson for The Center
  • In collaboration with the Chief Development Officer, develop and deepen relationships with foundations, major donors, corporations, and community members

Program Operations and Administration

  • Ensure that administrative, programmatic, and clinical functions are efficient, effective, of the highest quality, and treat all involved with full respect
  • Promote employee collaboration, leadership development, organizational diversity, and positive staff morale
  • Ensure a commitment to building cultural competence and supporting staff diversity initiatives
  • In collaboration with senior leadership, oversee development and implementation of integrated operational systems including improvements related to administrative operations, infrastructure, and clinical functions
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations, licensure requirements, and grant/contract covenants
  • In collaboration with Senior Staff, assure program planning, development and evaluation to ensure relevance and effectiveness of The Center’s services

Financial Oversight

  • In concert with the Board, ensure supporting the Center’s financial health; support the Board’s ability to fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities
  • Demonstrate experience with outpatient revenue cycle oversight and requirements of third-party payers to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with financial reporting requirements for state and federal grant management
  • In collaboration with the Finance Director, provide leadership in developing and monitoring annual budgets, ensuring adequate financial and internal controls are in place, anticipating needed financial modeling, and providing other fiscal oversight
  • Provide leadership and, where appropriate, direct involvement in:
  • contract negotiation and execution
  • identifying and cultivating new revenue streams
  • modeling multi-year financial business plans

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate will be an accessible, collaborative, and communicative leader with a track record of working successfully with diverse stakeholders, both internally and externally, through clear communications and successful and sustained personal relationships.

The candidate must possess the vision and leadership skills to gain the trust of their constituencies, while leading them through a changing and uncertain environment. This requires strong listening and decision-making skills, with a team-oriented approach that encourages innovative thinking and program development, while building strong internal leaders. It also necessitates the ability to attract and influence external stakeholders, whether public or private partners or collaborators, foundations or individual donors.

The ideal candidate must have a strong belief in and commitment to The Center’s mission as an independent community health care center, while understanding the new complexities of the health care environment. This requires the ability to navigate the political complexities of the health care arena and serve as an effective advocate for The Center. In addition to all the above, the candidate must have a proven record as an effective executive, leading and building a large and highly qualified staff and developing the necessary administrative and financial infrastructure to support it.

MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in a related field, such as management or human services, preferred
  • 10+ years of management experience with a strong preference for leadership experience in non-profit, mental health organizations
  • Mental Health clinical license and experience preferred but not required

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The annual salary range for this position is $200,000 to $250,000.
