Position: FOOD SAFETY SPECIALIST III – DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AND REHABILITATION – DOWNTOWN, OAHU

Salary: $5,107 to $6,221 per month (SR-20, Step D to I)

Responsibilities
- Conduct site visits to all eight correctional facilities on Oahu (4) and the neighboring islands (4) to perform sanitation inspections and audits.
- Perform the full range of independent environmental sanitation work assignments in an assigned geographic or defined specialty work area.
Food Safety Specialists promote, protect, and maintain a healthy and safe environment for the public through inspection, education, and enforcement activities to implement statutes, rules, and regulations related to environmental sanitation and safety programs concerning foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices. Work includes identifying, mitigating, and preventing disease transmission from improperly prepared foods, contaminated waters, adulteration, and misbranding of foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices.
Qualifications
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
- Legal Authorization To Work: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State to be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
- Education: Graduation from an accredited four (4)-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in one of the physical or biological sciences.
- Professional Specialized
Experience:
One and one-half (1-1/2) years professional inspectional or investigational work experience involved in the interpretation and application of laws and regulations in public health, demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of environmental health programs, pertinent regulations, and a working knowledge of bacteriology, chemistry, physics, vector control methods, and social sciences.
- Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
- Substitution Allowed: Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements will apply.
- Non-Qualifying
Experience:
Non-professional technical work experience such as vector control program inspection, investigation, education, and enforcement activities relating to control and/or experimentation of mosquitoes, rodents, and other small mammals, flies, fleas, and other insects performed in support of the Food Safety Specialist series functions is not qualifying.
