Description: Full Time / 37 Hours per Week / Permanent We are seeking a professional, empathetic and highly organised individual to join our Coroner's Office team as an Inquest Officer. This is an important role supporting His Majesty's Coroner in delivering a dignified and efficient service to the deceased and their families. Working as part of a dedicated team, you'll help ensure that inquest files are prepared to a high standard and submitted to the Coroner in a timely manner. You'll support the delivery of live, remote and documentary inquests within a court environment and help manage the various parties involved in the inquest process. This role requires sensitivity, professionalism and a strong commitment to delivering high-quality service in line with national guidelines set by the Chief Coroner. About the Team The Coroner's Office works together to support His Majesty's Senior Coroner in fulfilling their statutory duties. Our goal is to serve the needs of the deceased and bereaved by helping establish the cause of death through a respectful, dignified and efficient process. The team consists of Coroner's Officers, Inquest Officers and Administration Officers who work collaboratively to support the Senior Coroner, Area Coroner and Assistant Coroners. Location & Working Arrangements This a full time, permanent position working in the heart of the city (at City Hall and/Town Hall), with some flexibility for home working outside of court or inquest delivery, in line with the Local Authority's hybrid working approach. Working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 16:00. Key Responsibilities As an Inquest Officer, you'll: Prepare and confirm inquest files in collaboration with Coroner's Officers Support the delivery of court-based, live, remote and documentary inquests Complete documentation required to conclude the inquest process and enable death registration Liaise with bereaved families, witnesses, jurors, partner organisations and other interested parties Organise and prepare jury inquests where required Ensure inquest hearings are legally compliant and conducted professionally Share relevant information with government agencies and attend meetings where necessary Work closely with Coroners and Coroner's Officers to progress cases to inquest What We're Looking For We are looking for someone who is diligent, organised and able to work with a high level of accuracy in a sensitive environment. You'll have: Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities Excellent communication and interpersonal skills The ability to engage professionally with individuals experiencing emotional distress Experience using electronic databases, spreadsheets and multiple IT systems Confidence using remote communication platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom A strong understanding of confidentiality and data handling Experience in an administrative role with a strong customer service element, or a responsible role within a court environment You'll also be able to develop a sound understanding of relevant legislation, national guidance and local authority policies.
