Overview

The Port of Seattle Police Department is currently offering a $25,000 hiring incentive for Lateral Officers, paid out in two installments. The role involves providing community-oriented law enforcement services to Port-owned properties with emphasis on Seattle‑Tacoma International Airport and Maritime properties.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol designated areas to deter and discover crime
  • Enforce applicable laws, ordinances, and regulations
  • Respond to citizen calls for assistance, provide emergency services, detain and/or arrest persons charged with crimes
  • Issue citations, provide traffic control, investigate accidents and assist motorists and pedestrians
  • Investigate crime, write reports and testify in courts of law
  • Work with tenants, residents, businesses, and the community
  • Use force, including deadly force, when necessary

Qualifications

WA State Applicants:

  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • U.S. Citizen, lawful Permanent Resident, or DACA recipient
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English
  • High School Diploma or GED certificate
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License or ability to obtain one
  • Minimum 24 consecutive months as a full‑time, paid commissioned officer assigned to patrol or investigative duties (no more than a 24‑month break in service)
  • Eligible to apply as a lateral from the Washington State Gambling Commission, Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board, or Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife

Out-of-State Applicants:

  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • U.S. Citizen, lawful Permanent Resident, or DACA recipient
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English
  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License or ability to obtain one
  • Minimum 24 consecutive months as a full‑time, paid commissioned officer assigned to patrol or investigative duties (no more than a 24‑month break in service)
  • Successfully completed a state‑certified police academy granting a full authority certificate and holding a current active full authority law enforcement certification
  • Full authority certificate details:
    • Fully commissioned state peace officer with full powers of arrest and unrestricted enforcement powers of criminal and traffic statutes within the state of issuance while acting in an individual capacity
    • Completed a state authorized and sanctioned law enforcement training academy for its full duration
  • Meet requirements outlined in Washington Administrative code 139‑05‑210 “Basic Law Enforcement Certificate of Equivalency” and be qualified to attend the Washington State Equivalency Academy; may be required to complete the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Basic Law Enforcement Academy if deemed necessary

What Else You Need to Know

  • Background Investigation: Must pass a background investigation including criminal records check, polygraph, medical, psychological examination, driving, credit, arrest, military, educational records; successful completion of Patrol Training Officer process required.
  • Automatic Disqualifiers: Review list related to Criminal Activity, Driving Record, Drug Use, Employment, Financials before submitting application.
  • If federal law enforcement officer/agent, correction officer, or military police officer, not qualified for lateral positions.
  • Applicants holding a Law Enforcement Certification with less than 24 consecutive months experience may be considered for exceptional consideration upon review by Chief of Police.
  • Work Schedule: Fixed 12.5‑hour shifts, dayshift 5:00 AM–5:30 PM, night shift 5:00 PM–5:30 AM; newly hired officers may initially work weekend night shifts; some overtime may be needed.
  • Work Environment: Indoor and outdoor variability, exposure to traffic, fumes, airborne particles, aircraft noise; required to walk and stand for extended periods.
