Responsibilities

Sergeants serve in a first-line unit‑level supervisory capacity, overseeing a team. They manage schedules, evaluate direct reports, prepare and recommend development plans, provide coaching, discipline, and commendations as appropriate. Sergeants plan for a shift, make assignments, respond to public inquiries, intake complaints, and ensure compliance with policy, law, and local regulations. Sergeants may be assigned to patrol, investigations, or another unit or squad. Sworn police personnel may be deployed to assist in the field based on operational needs and may fulfill other law‑enforcement or administrative duties as assigned. Sergeants assigned to investigation will work an on‑call rotation; those assigned to patrol will work regular shift hours. All sworn officers are essential personnel for inclement weather and emergencies and may be required to work overtime depending upon circumstances and special events.
