Job Purpose

Lead the organization's legislative and legal compliance agenda, setting the strategic direction for how the organization understands, interprets, and meets its obligations under applicable laws, regulations, and legislative frameworks. This role owns the design and integrity of the organization's legal policy architecture and compliance governance, translating complex legislative developments into clear strategic direction for executive leadership. Acting as the organization's senior authority on legislative compliance, the Senior Manager shapes the organization's legal risk posture, drives a culture of accountability from the top down, and ensures the organization not only meets legal standards but sets a benchmark for compliance excellence across the industry.

Job Specific Accountabilities

Legislative Strategy and Policy Governance

  • Set the strategic direction for legislative interpretation and compliance, ensuring the organization anticipates rather than reacts to changes in laws, acts, regulations, and frameworks affecting its operations.
  • Own the organization's legal policy framework end to end — directing the development, review, and continuous evolution of internal policies and procedures so they stay ahead of legislative, regulatory, and industry shifts.
  • Serve as the trusted senior advisor to executive leadership on the strategic implications of new or amended legislation, translating legal complexity into clear, decision-ready guidance.
  • Cultivate and steward high-level relationships with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and legal institutions, positioning the organization as a credible and proactive partner and securing early insight into legislative direction.

Compliance Governance and Legal Oversight

  • Design and own the organization's accountability and compliance governance frameworks, defining how legislative responsibilities are assigned, embedded, and upheld across the enterprise.
  • Partner with executive and senior leadership to ensure legislative and regulatory obligations are built into organizational strategy, structures, and key decision-making — not bolted on after the fact.
  • Direct the organization's program of legislative reviews, compliance audits, and gap analyses, setting the standards and priorities and ensuring corrective actions are seen through to resolution.
  • Own the assessment and mitigation of legal risk arising from non-compliance, defining the organization's approach to risk tolerance and leading the strategies that protect it.
  • Provide senior legal leadership across cross-functional and enterprise-level initiatives, shaping how compliance considerations inform major organizational decisions.
  • Represent the organization in high-stakes legal discussions, negotiations, and consultations with external stakeholders, safeguarding its interests and reputation.

Compliance Culture and Capability Building

  • Define and sponsor the organization's strategy for building legal and compliance awareness, ensuring education programs are purposeful, prioritized, and reaching the right audiences at every level.
  • Champion a culture of compliance and legal accountability from leadership down, setting the tone and expectation that legislative responsibility is shared and owned across the organization.
  • Guide and mentor team members and colleagues, building the collective legal and compliance capability of the function and developing the next layer of expertise.
  • Oversee the creation of clear, accessible resources and materials that keep legal and compliance knowledge alive and embedded in day-to-day practice.

Risk Management and Executive Reporting

  • Own the identification and management of enterprise-level legal risk tied to legislative compliance, leading risk assessments and the mitigation strategies that flow from them.
  • Deliver insightful, data-driven reporting on compliance performance to executive leadership and relevant governance forums, surfacing risks, trends, and strategic recommendations.
  • Ensure the integrity and traceability of the organization's legal record — contracts, agreements, audits, and corrective actions — holding the function to a high standard of documentation and transparency.
  • Establish the framework for periodic evaluation of policies, controls, and accountability mechanisms, embedding stakeholder feedback to drive continuous improvement.
  • Lead impact assessments of compliance initiatives, evaluating their real effectiveness against organizational objectives and legal requirements, and adjusting direction accordingly.
