Overview

The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Police Officer for Billings, MT and ensures a safe and secure environment across all VA Administrations within various settings. This position is a vital part of the VA Police Services and often serves as the face of the VA and as the first person a veteran or visitor encounters when entering a VA facility. The incumbent sets a positive example for subordinates, encouraging a relationship of trust and respect.

Qualifications

GS-8 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS‑7 grade level in the federal service) that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA’s) and other characteristics to perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes:

  • Leadership skills to carry out the responsibilities of a Lead Police Officer over immediate PS staff.
  • Detailed knowledge of the full range of police and law‑enforcement services including state, county and federal laws, regulations, methods and procedures that apply to the facilities depending upon their geographical location and type of jurisdiction.
  • Thorough knowledge and skills of policing procedures to conduct search and seizure of evidence/contraband, pursue and apprehend persons, identify and arrest violators, serve warrants, and support dignitaries.
  • Knowledge of firearms and tactics for deployment in emergencies, including weapons, chemical agents, negotiations, building layouts, terrorist threats, counter‑terrorism methods, search and rescue techniques, and crowd control.
  • Knowledge of Police Service security protection operations to evaluate existing crime‑prevention methods and recommend changes.
  • Skills to effectively communicate in a socio‑political climate and prepare police‑related reports and documents.
  • Knowledge of proactive patrolling activities to maintain law, order and a safe environment based on criminal or terror trends and gang activity.
  • Skills using automated systems and equipment in a dispatch center, including NCIC, closed‑circuit television, NIMS and Incident Command System.
